The SLSD board of education will be having a special meeting Thursday, April 10th at 3:30 p.m.


Our National Honor Society members came together to support the incredible work of our school nurses by hosting a drive and collecting much-needed items for the nurses’ station. From bandages to cough drops, every donation helps keep our school community safe and cared for. Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make a difference!

Mr. Zach’s class won 1st place in a 2nd-6th grade IXL competition, and was awarded an ice cream party. Mrs. Ash’s class won 2nd place, and was awarded a pizza party. Both classes voted, and decided to have their parties combined into an ice cream and pizza party! These 2nd and 6th graders answered, on average, around 3,000 questions correctly each during the month of March!


Southern Local recently hosted its annual Math, Science, and Art Night! Students showed off projects, and guests got to participate in a variety of activities. Students had opportunities to win prizes and take home items that they made. Emerie Smith won Cincinnati Reds tickets, Alia Cooper and Kinzlee Aldridge won Cosi tickets, and Oakley Kinnan won Savannah Bananas gear. Thank you to everyone who participated!








Southern High School Students’ Work Featured in the Upcoming Athens International Film Festival.

Southern High School English students will have their documentary video projects highlighted at the 52nd Athens International Video and Film Festival next week. Senior students Isabella Klein, Khloe Jones, Timberlyn Templeton, Amanti Hayes, Gryphon Thomas, Maddie Houghton, and Carson Reuter created documentaries last year as part of the Our Ohio documentary film project sponsored by WOUB and the Ohio University College of Communication. The student films include local members and organizations including RACO, the Racine Volunteer Fire Department, First Baptist Church, and more.The film festival takes place at the Athena Cinema in Athens Ohio April 7- 13, 2025. Sergeant Berger from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gallipolis Post, recently stopped by to visit Ms. Christy's Kindergarten class.


Students in grades 3-6 recently learned how to "Say No to Drugs" in a presentation given by School Resource Officer Jimmy Spears.
Sheriff Scott Fitch talked to the students about the dangers and consequences of drug use. Officer Spears challenged each homeroom to make posters to help others Say NO to Drugs!

Southern’s Prom is April 12th with walk-in being 7 to 8pm.

The NHS decided they wanted to help out and are hosting a Clinic Supplies Drive March 31-April 4th. The clinic is needing supplies such as cough drops, tissues and Band-Aids. NO MEDICATION!
NHS is hosting a competition with this drive, and the homeroom that brings in the most items will receive an ICE CREAM SUNDAE PARTY!!
Our clinic does a lot for each and every one of us, so I think this is a great opportunity to give back!

A big thank you to Chelsey Pullins with Meigs Soil and Water Conservation District for teaching our Honors Biology 1 students about invasive species this morning. We had fun with the hands-on activity that demonstrated ways invasive species outcompete native species. Students were engaged and curious, we look forward to welcoming Meigs SWCD into our classroom again soon!

CCP (College Credit Plus): Those interested in taking CCP courses for the 25-26 school year need to attend one of the CCP parent meetings March 12 or March 26) This includes all students currently and those not currently taking CCP courses this school year. You can not take CCP courses for the 25-26 school year if you and your parent/guardian do not attend one of these meetings.
