Southern Homecoming Parade: Friday, October 10, 2025
Lineup starts at noon and all should be lined up by 1pm- see Aiden Dodson
Students cannot drive any vehicles, tractors, etc… in the parade.
No political participants permitted.
All students will report back to homeroom after the parade.
Parade will start at approximately 1:45ish

This week (9/29/25-10/3/25) kicks off Southern High Schools Homecoming Activities with Service Week. Students have set goals and plan to collect food for those in need and raise money to go toward some charitable events. They will do this through Penny Wars, a food drive, and by participating in Mad Hatter.
We would also like to introduce our Homecoming Court:
Kindergarten Crown Bearer and Flower girl: Mayson Ash and Harlow Broshears. Attendants: 7th grade- Hadley Booth; 8th grade- Taylor Lewis; 9th grade- Katelyn Wickline; 10th grade- Emma Leachman; and 11th grade- Ali Norris. King candidates are: Murphy Dunfee, Noah Leachman, Kase Nelson, David Kemppel, and Hunter Jarrell. Queen candidates are: Lauren Allen, Jaylynn Hupp, Audrey Riffle, Kiersten Rose, and Laynee Hill.
Southern’s Homecoming game will be on October 10th verses Belpre.
Students in grades 3-6 had a great time learning about outer space today at Janet's Planet. Grades K, 1, & 2 come back tonight (Wednesday)at 6:00 to learn more and see another presentation!
We are currently having issues with Hudl, so it will not be livestreamed on the Hudl platform.

The Meigs County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for its Student Ambassador Program, and our senior students have the opportunity to be part of it.
This program is designed to give high school seniors hands-on leadership experience, valuable networking opportunities, and a front-row seat to how business and community partnerships shape our county. Ambassadors serve as representatives of their schools, assist with community events, and connect with business and civic leaders from across the region.

Human Geography Class: The Map Projection Dilemma:
Our students in Mr. Pickens' Human Geography class are getting a hands-on look at a major challenge in cartography: representing our round Earth on a flat map. Today, they tackled the age-old projection dilemma!
Students first created their own world on a tennis ball. Then came the challenge: how to accurately transfer their globe to a flat surface? As they tried to flatten the curved surface, they quickly saw how their continents stretched and distorted. This simple but powerful activity helped them grasp the trade-offs in creating maps.
We're already seeing the concepts of Mercator distortion and the Robinson projection come to life. The students' flattened worlds demonstrate why a map can't have perfect size, shape, and distance all at once. Next week, they'll dive deeper into how different projections are used for specific purposes, from navigation to education
Speaking of football, tonight is the first home game for our varsity team. Admissions is $6 for adult and $5 per child. Games starts at 7 versus South Point.
Few reminders: Admission is taken at the main entrance and lower entrance for the stadium. No one should be in the playground areas during the game. Students that leave will have to pay to renter. Good sportsmanship and fan behavior is expected.
Two concessions will be open: The Athletic Boosters will be on the away side under the bleachers and the Band Boosters will be on the home side between the fan and band bleachers.
We look forward to a great performance from our cheer squad, band, and football team.
