Southern Junior-Senior High School is proud to announce the 2026 Homecoming Court!
We are excited to recognize this year’s students who will represent Southern during Homecoming Week.

Students in Mr. Jordan Pickens’ High School Psychology class had a special guest today as they welcomed Dr. Sandra Hoyt from Ohio University!
Dr. Hoyt is a social psychologist whose areas of interest include attitudes, prejudice, identity, and legal psychology. She has conducted research on topics including prejudicial attitudes, jury decision-making, feminist identities, and health behaviors among horseback riders.
Dr. Hoyt also shared her experiences as a first-generation Appalachian student from Southeastern Ohio and discussed her journey from being an Ohio University undergraduate to becoming a professor. Her experiences provided our students with a valuable look at the opportunities available through higher education and careers in psychology.
Guest speakers like Dr. Hoyt provide our students with the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom with real-world experiences and careers. It was a great opportunity for students to ask questions, engage in discussion, and see psychology from the perspective of someone actively teaching and researching in the field.

Grades 7-12- XC conditioning begins next Monday (7/27) from 8:00-9:30am at Star Mill Park.
Southern Local's Health Clinic will be closed on Monday, July 20th. It will reopen the following Monday July 27th and every Monday there after until school starts.
The OHSAA and SEDAB scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically. To be nominated by their high school students must meet the following criteria: must be a graduating senior; have a grade point average of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale; must have received a minimum of three varsity letters in one OHSAA sanctioned sport or four varsity letters in a combination of any two or more OHSAA sanctioned sports.
In conjunction with the OHSAA, the Southeast District Athletic Board awarded eighteen scholarships to athletes across the district and hosted the annual scholarship banquet on June 22,2026 at Parks Edge in Jackson, Ohio to honor this year’s recipients. Scholarships awarded included the SEDAB James Mains Memorial Scholarship, the SEDAB Roger Thompson
Memorial Scholarship, the Male and Female Ethnic Minority Scholarship, and 14 additional scholarships. Each scholarship was in the amount of $1,000.
Southern High School would like to congratulate Andre Chandler, Noach Leachman, and Kiersten Rose for being recipients of this scholarship.

Thank you to those that came for food today. COAD gave out 50 boxes in this trial run. Next week and the week after they will be able to give out 150 a week.
Reminder: Free Summer Meals TODAY from 2 pm to 4 pm out front of the school. You will get a week's worth of food and milk per child, sponsored by COAD (Corporation for Ohio' Appalachian Development). Please try to take advantage of this program TODAY so we can continue getting it. Thanks . This is every Thursday this summer!
