Mr. Pickens’ psychology students have been learning about PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), which led to a discussion about veterans with PTSD. During this discussion, they discovered that 185 Meigs County veterans have made the ultimate sacrifice in wartime. To honor these individuals, the students placed 185 flags in front of the school for Veterans Day.

Six students have emerged as winners in Mr. Pickens’ “November Madness” contest! Out of 107 participants, they accurately predicted how each state would vote in the electoral college. Students from his Psychology, Geography, American History, and Ohio History classes all took part in the challenge. Congratulations to the winners: Mady O’Brien, Kenzie Sellers, Bo Smith, Sophie Popp, Keeley Sellers (all pictured), and Alex Owsley (not pictured).

Southern Local will be having our annual Veterans' Day Programs on November 11. The first one will be in the elementary gym starting at 8:30 am. Followed by the 7-12 program in the HS gym starting at 9:45. All veterans are invited to attend and the veterans and their families will be provided refreshments following the 7-12 program.

The 3rd Grade Classes at Southern Elementary participated in Election Day Activities. The book, Duck for President, was read to each class and a discussion was held about what kind of character traits to look for in choosing a candidate to elect for president. Each student filled out a voter registration form. It was then approved and students had the opportunity to go to the polls and vote for their choice for President, Duck or Farmer Brown. The students enjoyed the election process and proudly wore their “I Voted” stickers.

Southern's National Honor Society (NHS) has been actively involved in serving monthly dinners at the American Legion. This partnership allows NHS members to not only contribute their time and effort but also to connect with local veterans, their families, and the broader community.

Mrs. Ash's homeroom collected the most cans in our food drive against Eastern. 484 cans! The class had their picture taken with the football team, cheerleaders, and band. They received a signed football, learned a cheer, and got to listen to the fight song.
