RACINE- At Southern High School, students are not merely studying theory; they are actively engaging in real-world business challenges.

Through Project RISE, they have collaborated with Serenity Spa by Chicly Confident, a local wellness spa committed to promoting relaxation, beauty, and self-care across all age groups. This experience transcended typical classroom assignments; it presented a genuine challenge posed by a local business.
Heather Dailey Johnson, the owner of Serenity Spa in Pomeroy, sought to expand her clientele by appealing to a younger demographic. She enthusiastically joined forces with Project RISE and the Southern Local School District for this innovative Real-World Problem-Solving Project.

Mr. Brian Allen’s sophomore students tackled a significant business challenge: determining how Serenity Spa could enhance its presence on Instagram and other social media platforms among younger audiences. Their research revealed that teens and young adults are drawn to short, engaging videos, transformative before-and-after content, and the latest trending hashtags.
The students delivered their insights through presentations, articulating their research methodology, supporting the viability of their proposed solutions, and outlining how these strategies could be practically executed.
“It was a true pleasure collaborating with Project Rise and the sophomores at Southern Local,” said Mrs. Johnson. “The students’ dedication to tackling the real-world business challenges presented to them was incredibly impressive. Their creativity, thoughtfulness, and commitment to finding solutions truly stood out.”
Project Rise provides an outstanding opportunity that supports both students and local business owners. Students gain invaluable insight and hands-on learning from local business leaders, while business owners benefit from fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. It’s a meaningful partnership that creates growth and inspiration on both sides.
Following the presentations, the business partner returned to provide feedback, assess the proposed solutions, and engage with the students—mimicking the dynamics of the professional world.
“Projects like this give students the chance to step beyond traditional classroom learning and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways,” communicated Mr. Allen. “Watching my students collaborate, think critically, and present real solutions to a local business challenge has been incredibly rewarding. Experiences like Project RISE not only build academic skills but also help students gain confidence in their ability to make a real impact in their community.”
Amy Robinson, Director of Project RISE, emphasized the importance of this hands-on experience, stating, “Through this initiative, students cultivate essential skills that extend beyond the classroom. They develop teamwork, critical thinking, communication, and the confidence to tackle real-world problems.”
This immersive project not only bridges academic learning and practical application but also empowers students to embrace the challenges of the modern business landscape.
SHS Principal Daniel Otto remarked, “This partnership exemplifies our commitment to experiential learning. By connecting students with community businesses, we are not only enriching their education but also fostering relationships that benefit both our students and local enterprises. I’m incredibly proud of the innovative spirit our students have demonstrated through this project."
