During his presentation, Smith emphasized the advantages of the apprenticeship model, which uniquely blends paid, hands-on job training with structured classroom instruction. This “earn while you learn” approach allows participants to build real-world experience and develop specialized skills.

Smith also highlighted the diverse career opportunities available within the plumbing and pipefitting trades, noting the strong demand for skilled workers across the region. He spoke about the potential for competitive wages, job security, and long-term career advancement, making the program an attractive option for students preparing to enter the workforce.

In addition to outlining the technical aspects of the program, Smith stressed the importance of foundational professional qualities such as a strong work ethic, reliability, and a commitment to continuous learning—traits that are essential for success in any skilled trade.

Southern High School’s principal, Mr. Daniel Otto, expressed strong support for the initiative, underscoring the importance of exposing students to a variety of post-graduation pathways.

“Opportunities like this are incredibly valuable for our students,” Mr. Otto said. “While college is the right path for some, it’s not the only path to success. Programs like the Local 168 apprenticeship provide access to meaningful, high-demand careers that can lead to long-term stability and personal fulfillment. We are proud to connect our students with experiences that broaden their horizons and prepare them for life beyond high school.”

Events like this reflect Southern High School’s ongoing commitment to career readiness, ensuring that all students—regardless of their chosen path—are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions about their future.
