RACINE – The administration and staff at Southern Local School District would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Capabilities Charitable Foundation for its generous grant, which made it possible to provide much-needed sensory materials for students with learning disabilities.
Thanks to this incredible support, in the summer of 2025, Mrs. Leslie Dunfee, Special Education Teacher at Southern Elementary, was able to acquire a variety of sensory tools, including a crash pad, jelly boards, a sensory wall panel, sensory interactive liquid motion tiles and a cloud rocker. These materials are already making a meaningful difference, not only for the students in Mrs. Dunfee’s classroom but for any student in the school who may benefit from additional sensory support.
One of the most impactful additions has been the crash pad.
This soft, cushioned mat provides deep pressure input, which is naturally calming and helps students regulate their emotions. It has proven especially beneficial for students who may feel overwhelmed, anxious, or have excess energy, giving them a safe and constructive way to release tension and refocus.
The cloud rocker is another favorite among students. Its gentle rocking motion provides vestibular input, helping children feel more relaxed, focused, and organized. Similarly, the jellyboards and sensory wall panel engage students through movement and tactile exploration, supporting sensory development, fine motor skills, and overall self-regulation.
“These tools create a more inclusive and supportive environment where all students have access to strategies that help them thrive,” said Mrs. Dunfee. “We are so grateful to the Capabilities Charitable Foundation for investing in our students’ well-being and learning. Their generosity allows us to meet each child’s unique needs and helps every student feel supported and successful.”
Mrs.Tricia McNickle, Principal of Southern Elementary, added, “Our students benefit every day from the thoughtful addition of these sensory materials. Seeing children use the tools to focus, calm themselves, or simply explore in a safe and engaging way reminds us why these resources are so important. We are incredibly thankful to the Capabilities Charitable Foundation for helping us provide every child with the support they need to succeed.”
The Southern Local School District is proud to provide a learning environment where all children can flourish, and this grant has been an extraordinary step forward in that mission.
