Racine, OH: Monday, October 27, 2025- Southern Local Board of Education recognized the following as high achievers for Southern Local. Thank you to Mr. John Hoback and Home National Bank for sponsoring Southern Locals’ STORM Student and Student of the Month Program.
STORM Students of the Month

Joseph Bishop- 1st Grade
Joey approaches every task he undertakes with determination and a smile. He consistently gives his best effort, offers kind compliments to others, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to both classmates and teachers. Joey’s positive attitude and caring heart brighten every day. Even when things get hard, he never gives up — a true example of perseverance and kindness.

Alia Cooper- 6th Grade
Alia has been a model student for kindness and inclusivity in the classroom. She demonstrates a positive attitude, assists her classmates, and is a positive role model for those around her. Alia notices things about others, whether it be if they need help or they are feeling sad, and helps them in any way she can. Alia proves she is a STORM Student by always making a positive difference in our school.
Southern Jr./Sr. High Students of the Month

Julie Wilson- 9th Grade
Julie consistently demonstrates respect, kindness, and responsibility in everything she does. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to both teachers and classmates, and her positive attitude brightens the classroom. Julie approaches every assignment and challenge with focus and determination, showing a strong commitment to doing her education. Her leadership is quiet yet powerful — she leads by example, encourages others to stay on task, and models what it means to be a supportive and dependable classmate. We are proud to have Julie at Southern High School!

Tyson Hupp- 11th Grade
Tyson has had a lot on his plate this past month--school, football, FFA duties and more. He has gone above and beyond completing all these things PLUS he has been volunteering and working hard in his Ag classes. Tyson came in, in his spare time, to make sure the FFA tractor was back up and running for the Homecoming Parade and also has been teaching and helping Ms. Meek’s Shop 1 students learn how to weld for the first time. His leadership skills are very impressive and he certainly deserves to be recognized for all of his hard work!
Teacher of the Month:

Philip Hoffman
Mr. Philip Hoffman is an outstanding physical education teacher who brings energy, positivity, and care to everything he does. He is always willing to help out wherever needed, whether it’s assisting with arrival and dismissal or lending a hand around the school. In the gym, Mr. Hoffman creates an environment where students are excited to participate, learn teamwork, and build confidence. He remains calm and patient, helping students navigate challenges and encouraging them to always do their best. His dedication to students’ growth—both physically and emotionally—makes him a valued and respected member of the Southern team.
Staff Member of the Month

Cheryl Smith
After being away for a short time last year, Cheryl has jumped right back in like she never left. Her positive attitude, reliability, and wonderful connection with students truly stand out. Cheryl goes above and beyond to make sure her bus riders feel safe and cared for each day. We are so glad to have her back in the driver’s seat and appreciate the dedication and heart she brings to her role. This recognition is very well deserved!
Congratulations to those honored and to their families.
