Students who attended

On October 21st, 2025, students from Racine Southern High School FFA chapter and STEM class took a field trip to the major construction site along Route 33 to learn more about the heavy equipment being used and the work being done to improve the highway. The students learned of all the different careers such as Engineer, Mechanic, Pipe layer, Carpenter, Laborer. And Operators. A big thanks to Kokosing for putting this trip together, and giving us a tour of the job site.

The visit gave students a first-hand look at modern construction technology, techniques and careers. Representatives from Kokosing led a guided tour of the site, explaining the purpose of the project and demonstrating how different types of heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, graders, and dump trucks, are used to move earth, build foundations, and prepare the roadway for paving.

The FFA members connected the experience to their lessons in agricultural mechanics and land management, while the STEM students explored the engineering and environmental science aspects of the project. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about safety, project planning, and career paths in construction, engineering, and equipment operation.

Ms. Meeks and Dr.El-Debaja organized the trip to give students practical insight into how science, technology, and teamwork come together in large-scale infrastructure projects. The visit also helped students understand the importance of construction in supporting local communities and improving transportation.

By the end of the tour, students left with a greater appreciation for the skill and precision required in modern construction and some even expressed interest in pursuing careers in engineering, construction management, or heavy equipment operation.

The students listen to the instructors while they talk about their duties and responsibilities.
