Southern Elementary blasted off into an out-of-this-world learning adventure on September 24, 2025, when Janet’s Planet came to visit! Students from Kindergarten through 6th grade had the incredible opportunity to explore the wonders of space through hands-on STEM activities and creative projects all led by Janet Ivey-Duensing, the creator and CEO of Janet’s Planet, Inc.
Throughout the day, students built and launched stomp rockets, engineered paper helicopters and straw rocket ships, built glowing constellation nightlights, and even designed their own space mission patches! As they worked, they learned about space travel, the science of space, and what it takes to be a great crewmate on a spaceship — teamwork, curiosity, problem-solving, and imagination.
Janet inspired both students and families with her passion for science and space exploration. She not only guided students through their projects but also stopped by classrooms to share stories, spark questions, and encourage everyone to dream big.
The mission of Janet’s Planet is to “work, engage, and build with raw materials”—not aluminum, steel, or titanium, but the most powerful material of all: young, brilliant minds ready to explore the universe! Janet was an incredible presenter and is a known powerhouse voice in space and STEAM education. For over 27 years, Janet has ignited curiosity in young minds through award-winning television, live performances, digital programming, and unforgettable hands-on learning experiences.
🌟 This amazing event was made possible through the generous support of the Meigs County Foundation, The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, the Southern Elementary PTO and the Ohio University Performing Arts and Concert Series. Their partnership helped bring this unforgettable learning experience to our students and community. To learn more about Janet and her exciting work, visit janetsplanet.com.
