RACINE, Ohio — On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, sixth-grade students at Southern Elementary School engaged in an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) career exploration event designed to introduce them to a variety of professional fields.
The event was organized and led by Jocelyn Howard, Broadband Coordinator at Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP) and Morgan DeLay, Director of the Area 14 Workforce Development Board, as well as Destany Cox, Career Pathways Specialist with OhioMeansJobs in Meigs County. Southern Elementary educators Mrs. Autumn Lisle and Mrs. Katie Ash were big supporters of the fun VR experience.
Using VR headsets, students were immersed in a range of simulated professional environments, allowing them to explore careers such as welding, diesel engine repair, nursing, surgery, construction, and road maintenance.
The interactive capabilities of virtual reality enhance student engagement and motivation, making the exploration of various career paths more compelling and enjoyable.
"Observing students' reactions to the virtual reality scenario was truly engaging, particularly their verbal responses," said Mrs. Lisle, sixth-grade teacher. "I experienced the knee surgery simulation myself—it was fascinating to be immersed in the Emergency Room environment and to gain a comprehensive view of the procedure."
Sixth-grade teacher Mrs. Ash participated in a virtual reality simulation focused on repairing a power outage. During the experience, she climbed 400 feet and used virtual tools, such as pliers, to help restore power.
"The simulation was incredible—it genuinely felt like I was 400 feet in the air, and the sense of height was very real," said Mrs. Ash. "I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope that more students will have the opportunity to try it."
These interactive simulations provided a realistic glimpse into high-demand and often high-risk occupations, offering students a safe platform to develop foundational skills and engage in decision-making activities.
This hands-on experience aimed to spark curiosity, build awareness of diverse career opportunities, and encourage early career exploration through the use of cutting-edge technology.
Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible.
