Save the Date! Hands on Apprenticeship Day!

Pomeroy- On March 6, 2024, Southern High School juniors and seniors had the opportunity to participate in a Hands-on Apprenticeship Day hosted by Ohio Means Jobs-Meigs County.

The event took place at the Meigs County Fairgrounds in Pomeroy, where students were introduced to a variety of AEP vehicles, including bucket and auger trucks. Experienced professionals were on hand to explain the different tools and safety equipment used on the job, and students had the chance to try on tool belts and briefly operate the auger truck with close supervision.

The event wasn't limited to AEP vehicles, however. Representatives from the University of Rio Grande, Operation Engineers Local 18, Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters (IKORCC), and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities were among those in attendance, providing students with valuable insights into a range of industries.

Thanks to SHS Guidance Counselor Russ Fields, Intervention Specialist Gary Kapp, teacher David Maxon, teacher Hazel Knotts, and Career Coach Beth Lanning for supervising the event.

Southern High School students were able to gain a greater understanding of the many career opportunities available to them. We extend our gratitude to OMJ Supervisor Shelly Adams, Job Developer Nancy Stotts, and staff members for extending an invitation to SHS to attend the event. It was an excellent opportunity for us to network and explore potential prospects. We appreciate your efforts in organizing such an informative and valuable event.
